Often a little, yes. A faint new-foam smell is normal for the first day or two after unboxing and usually fades within about 24 to 72 hours. A strong smell that's still obvious after three days isn't normal, so contact the brand.

Why it smells

The foam and fabric spend weeks sealed in a vacuum bag. When you open it, the air trapped in the materials comes out along with the foam's own scent. Boneless Couch Living describes exactly this, and gives the 24 to 72-hour range above. The other brands we cover don't publish anything about smell.

When to contact the brand

If the smell is still strong after 72 hours, or it smells chemical rather than "new," take photos, note the date you opened it and contact the brand while you're inside the return or quality window. Boneless Couch Living explicitly asks customers to do this.
