They sit lower than most sofas, usually 15 to 16 inches from the floor to the top of the seat. That's great for lounging and for kids, and harder if you have stiff knees or hips, or if you're tall. Here's what each brand publishes, and how to tell before you buy.
Published seat heights
| Couch | Seat height | Seat depth |
|---|---|---|
| Rove Lab M1 | 15" | 25.1" |
| Latitude Run Boneless 96" (Wayfair) | 15.7" | 35" |
| Ovios L-shape | About 16" | About 27.9" |
| Ovios Modular Sectional (U, 6 seats) | 16.5" | 28" |
| Monvane 4-seat | Not published | 27.6" |
| Boneless Couch Living | Not published | Not published |

For comparison, a typical framed sofa seat is around 17 to 19 inches high. So a boneless couch puts you 2 to 4 inches closer to the floor. It doesn't sound like much, but you notice it every time you stand up.
Who finds them too low
- Anyone with knee, hip or back trouble. Getting up from 15" takes more effort than from 18".
- Tall people. With a low seat, your knees end up higher than your hips.
- Older relatives who visit often. If the couch is also the main seat for guests, think about them too.
Low seats suit kids, people who like to sit cross-legged or sprawl, and rooms where you want the furniture to look small.
Deep seats make it feel lower
Depth matters as much as height. The Latitude Run is 35" deep, so most adults can't sit upright with their back on the cushion. That's perfect for lying down and awkward for sitting up to read or eat. The Rove Lab M1, at 25.1", is closer to a regular sofa.
How to test it at home in two minutes
- Measure your current couch from the floor to the top of the seat cushion.
- Stack firm cushions or books on the floor to 15 or 16 inches and sit on them for a few minutes.
- Stand up without using your hands. If that's hard, a boneless couch will be hard every day.
If you love the look but it's too low
- Pick a model with a published seat height and a shallower seat, such as the Rove Lab M1.
- Buy from a brand that takes it back after opening. Rove Lab gives you 100 days, with a $99 fee. Return rules for every brand.
- Or look at framed "cloud" couches instead. They have the soft look at a regular height, but ship in more pieces and need a freight delivery.
Our take: if anyone in your home struggles with low chairs, do the cushion test first, and only buy a boneless couch you can return after opening.
