Do boneless couches sag?

Cheap ones can, because all the weight sits on the foam. A boneless couch has no frame, so when the foam softens, the seat sinks. How fast that happens depends mostly on foam density, which most brands don't publish.
Why density matters
Density is how much foam is packed into a given space, measured in pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft³) or kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³, often written "D", as in 30D). Denser foam holds its shape longer. Firmness is something else: a foam can feel firm and still be low density.
Boneless Couch Living, one of the brands we cover, puts it this way on its FAQ: foam under 1.5 lb/ft³ "typically collapses in 12–18 months," while about 1.8 lb/ft³ and above is used for seating meant to last for years. That's the seller's claim, not a lab result, but it's a useful yardstick.
What each brand says about its foam
| Brand | What's inside | Density published? | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rove Lab | "SmartFoam", described as high-density, high-resilience foam; no springs | No number | 3 years |
| Monvane | Shredded cotton over a 30D foam base | 30D (about 1.9 lb/ft³) | 2 years, 3 with registration; covers eligible foam defects, not normal wear |
| Boneless Couch Living | All-foam or foam over a steel spring core, by model | Only where the supplier states it, marked "supplier-stated" | 90-day quality guarantee; coverage lists "foam sagging beyond normal wear" |
| Ovios | Foam over springs | No | 1 year |
| Latitude Run (Wayfair) | Foam over coil springs | No | None listed |
From each brand's own FAQ, policy and product pages, checked on October 28, 2026.
30 kg/m³ ÷ 16.02 = about 1.87 lb/ft³. Our conversion, not the brand's.
Springs help, but don't fix weak foam
Models with springs under the foam, like Ovios and Latitude Run, feel firmer and more upright, and the springs take some load off the foam. The seat cushion on top still compresses over time, so foam quality matters there too.
How to keep it from sagging
- Rotate and swap modules every few weeks, the way you'd flip a mattress. Most people always sit in the same spot.
- Don't judge it in the first days. Foam keeps recovering after unboxing. Rove Lab says full expansion can take a week or more. Expansion times by brand.
- Keep it off heat sources and out of strong sun, which can dry out foam and fabric.
- Photograph a sinking seat next to a tape measure as soon as you notice it, and contact the brand while you're inside the warranty.
What to look for before you buy
- A published foam density, ideally 1.8 lb/ft³ (about 29D) or higher.
- A warranty that names foam, not just "manufacturing defects."
- Replacement of single modules, so a worn seat doesn't mean a new couch. Boneless Couch Living says it ships a replacement module for approved claims.
Our take: Monvane is the only one of our five that prints a foam density, and it backs it with up to 3 years of warranty. Rove Lab doesn't give a number, but its 100-day return window lets you find out for yourself.
